What does the approval process entail for brand licensed products?

Over the past 17 years, my journey in consumer products has been a thrilling ride. There's a unique magic in witnessing a product evolve from its initial sketch to a tangible item in your hands, a magic that only intensifies with brand licensing.

As a child, I marvelled at the diverse array of characters and their captivating worlds across various entertainment genres. Bringing products partnered with the perfect IP adds depth and resonance. It's an opportunity to craft something that resonates deeply with consumers, enriching their lives in meaningful ways.

Each day, the joy of creating products that people can connect with and integrate into their daily lives is immensely gratifying. This is why I place such emphasis on refining the art of product development. It's about perfecting the alchemy of transforming ideas into tangible, cherished possessions, each imbued with its own story and significance.

When a licensee partners with a licensor on licensed product the approval process is an integral part. Together both will ensure that the product is perfectly aligned with the IP’s brand values forging a collaboration that will generate success for both sides.

The approval process for brand licensed products typically follows a standardised four-step procedure, though variations may occur among licensors.

Concept Stage

In this initial phase, the licensee presents visual representations of the product concept, utilising sketches or CGI depending on the product category. These visuals provide a glimpse into the licensee's vision for the product.

Sculpting/Print Stage

Whether the product is two-dimensional or three-dimensional, this stage demands a meticulous level of detail to be submitted for approval. The licensor scrutinises these details to ensure that the product remains faithful to the values of the chosen brand.

Pre-Production Stage

Samples are crafted to demonstrate the proposed product's quality and functionality. The licensee seeks approval from the licensor to proceed with mass production based on these samples.

Contractual Stage

Upon completion of mass production, samples are sent to the licensor for final approval where it will be compared against the pre-approved sample. This marks the culmination of the approval process, indicating that the licensee is prepared to sell the goods in compliance with the contractual agreement.

Throughout these pivotal stages, collaboration and open communication between the licensee and the licensor are vital to steadfastly uphold brand integrity, while diligently ensuring that the final product surpasses not only expectations but ignites a sense of awe and admiration.

This is precisely why cultivating strong, enduring relationships becomes paramount, acting as the cornerstone for achieving remarkable mutual success and fully unleashing the boundless potential inherent in the licensed property. It's through these genuine connections that extraordinary, licensed products are truly brought to life, resonating deeply with consumers, and leaving an indelible mark on the market landscape.
