Born to License’s Top 5 Licensed Products: SpongeBob SquarePants

At Born To License we’re passionate about licensing and its potential to create must-have products. We’re always on the lookout for new and exciting licensing collaborations from all over the world.

As inspiration for companies looking to make their first foray into licensing, we’ve asked a member of the Born To License team to highlight their favourite Top 5 licensed products from some of the most successful brands and Licensors in the biz. In this piece, CEO David Born discusses his favourite SpongeBob SquarePants licensed products.

Table of Contents

Since first being introduced in 1999, SpongeBob has become one of the most recognisable and adored characters in the world. With 14 seasons and close to 300 episodes, SpongeBob’s humour appeals equally to a broad demographic across generations. One of the first licensed products I treasured were my SpongeBob SquarePants slippers, which were a pair of yellow SpongeBob shapes that were unnecessarily huge!

    H&M Slippers

There is a huge range of SpongeBob slippers available to buy, but these ones are most likely the ones I had all those years ago! Looking at some of the product reviews it sounds like some customers had similar problems walking in them just like I did:

“These slippers are HUGE! Like as big as my dog huge.”
“The heads are too big which makes the slipper uncomfortable.”

    Select Brands Popcorn Popper

Select Brands did not make it easy to choose just one of their many licensed SpongeBob products. In addition to this popcorn popper, they also have a toaster and a slow cooker! This pops six cups of popcorns in 5 minutes and when ready cleverly allows the customer to flip the SpongeBob cover over to use as a serving bowl!

    Loungefly Mini Backpack

I’m a big fan of backpacks and this one certainly gets my approval. What I love about this when comparing with other SpongeBob backpacks is that Loungefly has charmingly added SpongeBob’s little legs, arms and hat. Anyone walking behind someone wearing this backpack is bound to smile, even if they’re having a horrible day.

    Alpha Group SpongeHeads

I’m not quite sure I fully understand this product, but I think it’s for the purposes of fancy dress. In addition to this SpongeBob glasses product, there is a Doe Eye SpongeBob, a Patrick and a Squidward. They’re over 20 inches tall and apparently fit ‘snuggly on nearly every head’. It looks like fun!

    Kraft Mac & Cheese

Kraft is one of the global FMCG brands that truly appreciate the power of licensing. They’ve had a number of licenses over the years, including SpongeBob which was introduced in the early 2000’s. It sadly left shelves in the early 2010’s. In 2017 a number of online petitions through change.org popped up, and the pressure started to build for Kraft to bring SpongeBob back to their packaging. To the relief of a lot of fans, Kraft re-introduced their licensed SpongeBob range in 2020.

SpongeBob is an evergreen brand that has truly stood the test of time. It translates extremely well across a broad range of categories, with a dual gender appeal across various age groups. It’s also the type of brand that we see used in a really unique creative way, with the SpongeBob IP being used across a huge variety of applications. It’s certainly one of my personal favourites as far as licensed product goes!
